They are descended from a Thaarn auxiliary unit of some renown and still hold many of the traditions of the Empire as sacred truths. Called “Mossies,” originally a slightly derogatory term for their green dress, they serve the people of the Old Forest as scouts and occasional defenders. Yvaine Redeheis, a 15-year-old heiress apparent to the Duchy of Redeheis, to be married to Conor Kenrick. She projects a demeanor of quiet naivete and seems a bit simple.

Villains, Foes, Monsters, and Similar Personages

Ach-Chorachach, commonly called Redspit, a fearsome ogre.

Lirith (fey), a semi-legendary wicked fairy who features in any number of tales. These usually involve her being bested by a canny peasant lad or planning and then executing a horrible curse, revenge, or maliciousness, the result of which often “explains” some natural phenomenon such as poison ivy. Her name has been given to at least one item, the sword Lirith, Heart’s Mourning.

Queen Lilianthe–a Fey noble.

Red Molly, a witch.

Rongongoror, a miserly ettin slain by the party in front of the Rhael Trading Fortress in Session 21.

Places

(Aerununor’s) Black Door–A shining black, featureless slab of some dark stone beneath the Sunburst Temple near Baerun’s Watch. When touched, mystical silver designs and wards appear on it. It bears the inscription Aerununor and, in a spiral around a curious hole a few inches wide that is set into the center of the door, “He with power will hold my key.” The inscriptions appear when read magic is cast.

Allalellenfalas–The Elvish name for the Court of the Silver Twilight, the dwelling of the Elves in the Southern Old Forest.

Azaxoror seems to be some kind of Thaarnic ruin, perhaps in the Old Forest. According to Prospero, the name means “Hall of Twilight”. Appearing in a dream after the party restored his golden hand, the ghost from the Sunburst Temple revealed an overgrown milestone bearing the words “Azaxoror” over a curious device of a snake with its tail in its mouth. There was an accompanying vision of a hoard of coins hidden in a stone wall. This device was stamped on several of the coins the party recovered from the well at the bottom of the Sunburst Temple. Atop a low rise behind the milestone was a crumbling structure, possibly a villa of some kind. Where this place may be, or if it is even real outside the world of dream, is yet unknown.

Baerun’s Watch is a formerly prosperous outpost under the Thaarn Empire, ruined in the Collapse and now slowly being rebuilt. It is home to the PCs.

Barrow Hill is a small green knoll a mile or two outside Baerun’s Watch, a frequent trysting place for young people including Dilys when she eloped.

The Witch Keep” is a large, half-ruined fortress and martell tower in D11 (II-0305). It was formerly occupied by many witches, attacked and disrupted by Drake and Fath in Session 27.

Enthor is a kingdom far to the South and West of Baerun’s Watch. Its king, Bagdemagus, was recently defeated by Amaranthis in a war that left her with title to the North Kingdom

Feybridge is a small village several days’ ride to the West of Baerun’s Watch. It is notable for its bridge over the Davish River, said to have been built by the Fey at the behest of a wizard.

Gilded Mountains. A small range in the @Old Forest. Elvish Tal-i-Annun, (roughly) “Mountains of Sunset”. So-named because of the light striking them, also the huge amounts of gold the Dwarves of @HouseHradin took from them.

Great Leap (The) is a natural arch or bridge of stone, 200 yards or more long and no more than 20’ wide under E9. It spans a chasm at least 500’ deep. The ceiling some 70’ overhead is home to a large colony of vampire bats. At each end of the Leap is a stone with an ancient carving on it, repainted often with red paint, depicting some anthropoid creature’s head with two hands over its mouth. A troll or similar creature guards the far end; the PCs fled it, and the endless enraged bats, in Session 24 or so.

Halls of Hradin. The extensive ancestral warrens of the House of Hradin, one of the three great lineages of the Dwarves. Located in the Gilded Mountains. Now held by Orcs for some 300+ years.

Harthall is a complex of buildings, including a palisade, armory and stables, and Great Hall with supporting farms that is home to the Order of the Hart

Henge Island is a smallish island, perhaps a mile in diameter, in Cloudfall Lake. The ruins of a henge are near its center; witches disport themselves there. A wood on the north shore of the island was previously home to three hags or devotees of the Crow-Mother, slain in Session 11 by the PCs. The island is usually shunned by the locals; only the north edge has places (barely) suitable for a small boat to land.

Iorent’s Needle, a ruin in a sharp natural peak or rock somewhere near the Gilded Mountains. Prospero announced a trip there in late T.R. 402 from which he did not return.

Manteion of St Marten is a small shrine or outpost of St Marten in Baerun’s Watch. It is a base for Drake the PC, and is led by Athelas and his apprentices Miles and Hamfast.

Oakwell (pop. 268) is a Folk o’ th’ Wood village located at E11. So named because of the grove of oaks surrounding a deep, clear natural spring, it is led by Vantir One-Eye (F5). The hermit Davilas has a small cave or cell near the spring, which he believes sacred to St Nevren who is reputed to have drunk there. He has been joined by Uther the witch-finder, rescued by the PCs from an Eery tower.

Oaldes is the ancient, sprawling capital of the South Kingdom at the junction of the Davish and the Seflir.

Old Forest is the Dantish name for the enormous wood, hundreds of miles across, that stretches to the north and east of Baerun’s Watch. Ancient and dotted with Thaarnic and older ruins, it seems to be spreading south in the past few decades.

Realm Below, general name for the vast network of caves, caverns, delvings, and diggings beneath the surface of the world. Occasionally called Kingdom Below.

Rhael Trade Fortress, a small underground keep in E9 formerly used by the Rhael in their dealings with the Realm Below. Home to the Ugarkh tribe of goblins, dispersed in late T.R. 402 by the player characters

Saeltinei. The Southron name for the South Kingdom.

Seflir (Dantish “Silverwater”) is a deep, fast-flowing river with its source in Cloudfall Lake.

South Kingdom is south of the Davish and east of Enthor, its ancient enemy. It is ruled by the beautiful and forceful Amaranthis. Its name in Southron is Saeltinei, and its people are also so-called.

Stone Wulfhaar, The: An inn owned by the PCs, founded in Session 30. It features a cap with harpy feathers sewn in and Arbogast’s hat and belt as decorations. More recently, a unicorn cape, also courtesy of Arbogast’s hall in the Eery, and two magnificent wyvern head mounts adorn the common room. The original stone Wulfhaar, who was petrified by a cockatrice on a dungeon delve, has been replaced with a well-done statue after being restored to flesh via the Efficacious Drop.

Sver Palenn (“Castle Blind”) is the fortress, Thaarnic in origin and greatly expanded over the years, which commands the height above Baerun’s Watch. It is frequently subject to the deep mists that rise from Cloudfall Lake.

Teflis, a Thaarn market town, now ruined and haunted by the ghosts of Thaarn soldiers and other, darker things. Reputed to be the scene of some great crime or massacre. On the map at location E8.

Thaarn Empire–a now-vanished empire founded centuries ago in what is now the North Kingdom by warlords from the East. Its ruins, lore, and treasures litter the landscape of the North Kingdom and the Old Forest.

The Weeping Mermaid is an inn and tavern at Baerun’s Watch. Its prize possession is a very old statue of a woman with a fish’s tail, said to weep when the Watch is in grave danger.

Ys is a ruined city, occupied by various peoples until the Thaarn made it a powerful capital, now broken and half-deserted. It lies many days to the West of Baerun’s Watch. Its wine, occasionally recovered from deep secret cellars by intrepid explorers of the Old City, commands staggering prices. The Great Temple is a dungeon with a fabulous and fearsome reputation.

Items and Objects

Black Door (general) is a slab of jet-black stone, usually featureless, that serves as a door. Originally created by the Ysir, the Rhael learned something of their art and built hundreds all over Talinore. All radiate strong enchantment magic, and some will display runes, devices, or patterns if a read magic is cast on them. These usually identify the Door’s owner or maker, but occasionally offer a clue (often by boasting) about how they may be opened. They typically require a unique key, meeting some criterion or performing some action, or speaking a specific command word.

Efficacious Drop, a glittering bead of dew affixed to a grass blade, carried by The Shining Adumanticious. He traded it to the party in exchange for Arbogast’s head, which both sides to the transaction assumed meant the end of the wicked ogre. While this was not so, the Drop turned Wulfhaar to flesh when it was applied to his statue as Adumanticious had promised.

Glassleaf, an elven-forged magic blade once carried by Maeve. It was lost after her captivity and subsequent death around Session 21.

Lirith “Heart’s Mourning” is a sword +1, +2 vs Men. Its special power is to cast fear at the wearer’s bidding, causing a target to flee with heart-racking sobs. The blade radiates enchantment per a magical weapon; the dweomer is vaguely unsettling to the diviner. Its name comes from a half-legendary wicked fairy, who supposedly granted it to a Rhael princeling’s mother when she wished true rulership for her son. It is said that one of his descendants, Bold Sir Ormeth, sought Lirith herself to confront her about the family’s ongoing woe only to disappear into the Old Forest, perhaps tormented forever by the wicked fey. In appearance, Lirith is a plain steel longsword without ornament. The weapon’s wielder may notice a faint pattern in the steel. In the right light, it suggests a screaming face.

Relation of St. Nevren to His Page the Blessed Arquinas is a scripture sacred to followers of St Nevren. In it, the Saint answers the questions put to him by his page, who wonders where his master has been “this year and a day.”

Time, Calendars, and Reckoning

Thaarn Reckoning, the “new calendar” decreed by Avrenor II and widely used throughout Talinore, especially in the southern and eastern regions. Current campaign date is 403 T.R., to wit, 1620 years off of “real world” time on Earth.
